Candidates who have passed class 12 and clear JEE mains advanced are now eligible for admissions into IIT’s for this year due to COVID-19.
HRD minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ on Friday, July 17 had announced that it is quashing the basic requirement of 75% in Class 12 for admissions into the coveted Indian Institutes of Technology for this academic year.
This decision comes as a result of suspension of certain board exams in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic across the country.
The basic criterion for admission into IIT till this year was 75% or above in Class 12 or top 20 candidates of Class 12 of a specific college.
Recently, CBSE, ICSE and other boards have decided to evaluate students based on previous examinations and have quashed the final board exams. Following this disruption in final exams, the Joint Implementation Committee (JIC) along with JEE Chairpersons of various IIT’s across the country have discussed about the change in marking system of different Class 12 boards.
During this meeting, the JEE Chairpersons have come up with the idea of doing away with the Class 12 board exam criterion for this academic year admissions.
Explaining the rational decision, the JIC member said to the media that cancelling this board exam criterion does not make a big difference in selection of merit candidates because those who score less than 75% in Class 12 board exams would not be able to qualify JEE mains examination.
Hence according to experts, doing away with the board exams criterion would not make any big difference in this year’s admission into IIT’s.
For the time being, JEE Mains 2020 examination has been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The government has recently made announcement that it would conduct IIT JEE mains examination from September 1 to 6.
JEE advanced, which will be written by top 250,000 candidates of JEE Mains examination for the gateway into IIT’s will be held on September 27, 2020.
