A developing cyclonic storm in the Bay of Bengal has prompted the cancellation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's scheduled visit to Visakhapatnam on November 29th. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) reports that a deep depression, currently located 980 km from Puducherry and 1,050 km from Chennai, is expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm within 24 hours.

The weather system poses a significant threat to Andhra Pradesh's coastal regions, with forecasts predicting heavy rainfall from Wednesday to Saturday. The IMD has issued comprehensive warnings for the region, advising fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea as wind speeds could reach up to 55 kilometers per hour along the coast. Local authorities have already implemented first-level warnings at coastal ports as a precautionary measure. The severe weather forecast has particularly affected the agricultural sector, with officials urging farmers in south coastal Andhra to take immediate steps to protect their harvested crops. The impact is expected to be most severe in several districts including Nellore, Prakasam, Tirupati, Visakhapatnam, Srikakulam, Kakinada, and Anakapalli, where substantial rainfall is anticipated.

Prime Minister Modi's cancelled visit was set to include several significant events, including the inauguration of the NTPC Green Hydrogen Hub and the launch of various railway and national highway projects. A major public rally planned at Andhra University Engineering College grounds has also been postponed. The Prime Minister's Office confirmed the cancellation, citing the developing cyclonic conditions as the primary concern. Weather experts predict that the cyclone will move northwestward towards the Tamil Nadu-Sri Lanka coasts in the coming days, maintaining its intensity. The IMD continues to monitor the situation closely, with particular attention to its potential impact on coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema regions.
