The National Health Service (NHS) hospitals are gearing up for what the UK government is describing as the biggest immunization program in the history. The first doses of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine against the COVID-19 has arrived at secure locations in the country from neighbouring countries in the continent over the weekend. Among the first to get the vaccine will be front line health care staff, citizens over the age of 80 and are home workers as approved by UK’s independent regulators. The Medicines and Health care products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has declared the claims to offer up to 95 per cent protection for all citizens and stated that the vaccine will ensure safety from the pandemic. UK Health secretary Matt Hancock asserts that the beginning of the vaccination will embark history not only in the UK but globally and urges everyone to play their part to suppress this virus, following social distancing and local restrictions to protect NHS while they carry out the heavy job. The government is taking high precaution towards ensuring that the delegated members for the vaccination are vaccinated as soon as possible as they are the groups who are prone to the highest risk of death from the deadly virus. More hospitals in the UK will start vaccinating over the coming weeks and months as the programme takes steady pace. Citizens are calling it the “life-saving-jab”. Some media reports indicate that the Queen Elizabeth II and her 99 year old husband Prince Philip are likely to be among the group. In spite of the huge complexities following the vaccination process, hospitals will kick start phase one of the campaign vaccination in dire need of safety and wellness for the country. The vaccination centers will be held in sporting venues and conference centers to withhold large crowds who will attend to take the vaccination. Although a vaccine is typically delivered by a simple injection in the shoulder, the Pfizer is slightly complex and there is a difficult logistical challenge towards giving it to the person. The vaccine will need to be stored at -70 degree celcius and can only be moved four times within that cold chain before being used again. Defrosting the vaccine itself can take multiple hours and there is also added additional time which is required in preparing the vaccine for administering. There are tracking devices on all the packages which hold the vaccine and a predicted 800,000 doses are expected to be available to the citizens. The government has ordered a total of 400 million doses enough to vaccinate 20 million people. The recorded deaths caused by the pandemic were a were 397 taking the country’s death toll to 61,014.By Meena Atmakuri

The Kharif marketing season for the session 2020-21 is all set to begin in the coming weeks in all the procuring states but the Centre asked the Punjab government to start procuring from Saturday itself. In the wake of farmers’ protests and agitations against the three farm bills passed in the Parliament, the Central government on Saturday ordered the paddy and rice procurement in Punjab and Haryana to be started immediately. The Kharif marketing season for 2020-21 for paddy or rice was scheduled to be commenced from next week but the central government allowed the procurement from this week itself in both Punjab and Haryana. The ministry of consumer affairs, food, and public distribution said that the government has taken this decision to smoothly handle the procurement process amid the chaos related to the farm bills. This move is also to ensure that the farmers would be facilitated in selling their produce at the minimum support price immediately. This decision comes at a time when the farmers in both Punjab and Haryana are protesting against the three farm bills, The Farmers Produce Trade and Commerce bill 2020, The Farmers Agreement on price assurance and farm services bill, and the essential commodities bill 2020. The farmers fear that through this bill the mandi system might come to an end and the MSP would come to an end too. However, the government has clarified that the MSP would continue. PM Modi had said that there is no need for the farmers to worry as the MSP would continue to be in place and has nothing to do with these bills. The bills deal with the trade outside the Mandi premises according to the Modi government. The central government fixes the MSO of 22 mandated agricultural crops and their remunerative prices based on the recommendations of agricultural costs and prices which will already be set. In the Kharif season of the session 2019-20, a total of 512 lakh metric tonnes of rice was procured from 23 states and the biggest quantity of rice was procured from Punjab and the next in line was Telangana, then Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha and Haryana. - By Gayatri Yellayi

Kisan express will run exclusively to ferry the farmers’ products and supplies which will the first of its kind. In the budget which was presented earlier this year, the finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman has made an announcement that an exclusive Kisan rail will be started in Karnataka which will be the first one in the southern state. The southwestern railways has also recently announced that a kisan express will start from Karnataka. Through this rail, the Indian Railways hopes to build a seamless national cold supply chain for ferrying the perishables including milk, meat and fish. The railways is planning to do this project through the PPP arrangements. Each of these Kisan express trains will ferry various products of the farmers to different places across the country. The first such kisan train will be started in Karnataka and will be running from KSR Bengaluru to H. Nizamuddin. The train is expected to pass through Mysuru, Hubli and Pune which will help the farmers along the route to load up their products in the train to sell at other parts of the country at cheap prices. The scheduled departure of this special Kisan express is at 16 45 hours on Saturday and is expected to reach H Nizamuddin station in Delhi at 23 45 hours on Monday. The kisan rail will do five trips from Bengaluru. The services will begin from September 19 this year and would concluded on October 17 this year. The train is scheduled to have multiple stops which include Mysuru, Hassan, Arsikere, Hubli Londa, Devanagari, Baelagavi, Miraj, Pune, Manmad, Bhusaval, Itarsi, Bhopal, Jhansi, Agra containment and Mathura. The return train will also travel along the same routes in the reverse order. However, no passenger will be allowed to board the train. It will be somewhat interesting to see how the farmer community will utilize this special service launched by the Indian railways. It is expected that the move will be helpful for many farmers across India to generate a steady income if this service will be utilized appropriately. The Kisan express rail is expected to make the process of moving the production of the farmers much cheaper than any other mode of transport which was opted earlier. This train will help in bringing perishable products like vegetables and fruits in just a short span of time. The train will also have frozen containers to build a seamless supply chain for the transport of meat, milk and fish. The Kisan express scheme is among the first ones to realising the goal of doubling the farmers’ income by 2022. The Indian Railways has earlier run the special trains like Banana specials but this will be the first multi commodity train. By Gayatri Yellayi
