In the latest update from the Union Health Ministry, India's active Covid-19 cases have surpassed 3,000, reaching a total of 3,420. Over the past 24 hours, four deaths have been reported. This follows Friday's figures of 640 new infections and one death, which brought the active caseload to 2,997. According to the ministry's data, 17 states have seen an increase in active cases, with Kerala, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Gujarat being among the most affected. Kerala recorded two fatalities, while Karnataka and Rajasthan reported one death each.

The death toll now stands at 5,33,332, with a case fatality rate of 1.18%. On a positive note, 325 individuals have recovered from Covid-19 in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of recoveries to 4,44,71,212. The national recovery rate remains high at 98.81%. The government has reassured the public that the current surge in cases is not a cause for alarm, but has advised those with underlying health conditions to wear face masks as a precautionary measure.

During a recent evaluation, Wednesday examined the readiness of healthcare facilities nationwide and emphasized the need to remain vigilant against emerging strains of Covid. According to government sources, a total of 22 cases of the Covid sub-variant JN.1 have been documented in various parts of the country as of December 21. Out of these cases, 19 were identified in Goa, while Kerala and Maharashtra each reported one case. The authorities have yet to disclose the specifics of one case.

JN.1, which is a descendant of the Omicron lineage, has been designated as a 'variant of interest' by the World Health Organisation. In recent weeks, it has rapidly spread, making it one of the most contagious viruses currently circulating. Officials have clarified that there have been no clusters of JN.1 variant cases in India. Furthermore, all reported cases have been mild, with patients recovering fully and without any complications.
