The disadvantages of consuming the birth control pills are related to the menstrual cycle, uterus infections, chronic pain in stomach, and other diseases related to the organs in the stomach. But the recent study conducted by the University of California, Los Angeles has come across a shocking impact of the birth control pills.
The UCLA scientists have mentioned that the birth control pills are capable of altering or shrinking the portions of a woman's brain and affect its function. The synthetic hormones found in the drug or pill which generally suppress the natural hormones after taking that causes the alterations in brain structure and function.
The researchers have studied a group of 90 women and found that the lateral orbitofrontal cortex and the posterior cigulate cortex were thinner in women who used oral contraception than in those who did not.
The lateral orbitofrontal cortex, which plays crucial role in emotion regulation and responding to rewards, and the posterior cigulate cortex is involved with inward-directed thought and shows increased recall or remembering.
The impact of the birth control pills on the lateral orbitofrontal cortex would be responsible for the increased anxiety and depressive symptoms.
"Some women experience negative emotional side effects from taking oral contraceptive pills, although the scientific findings investigating that have been mixed," Nicole Petersen, a neuroscientist at UCLA and the study's lead author, told 'The Huffington Post'.
"So it's possible that this change in the lateral orbitofrontal cortex may be related to the emotional changes that some women experience when using birth control pills," Petersen said.
However the study that was published in the journal Human Brain Mapping needs to determine the time period or longevity of these implications.
The over usage of the birth control pills would show impact on the psychological or mental behavior alongside with the implications of terminating pregnancies, frisking stomach, bleeding, and causing permanent infertility.
