With FIFA World Cup 2014 around the corner, we take a look at five greatest players in the tournament's glorious history:
PELE
Deemed as the greatest player in football, Pele has won three World Cups with Brazil. He was just a teenager when he helped the "Selecao" win the trophy in 1958. Four years later, he won the World Cup again despite of being injured. He was at the peak of his career when he led Brazil to victory in 1970. He is the only player to date to win three titles.
DIEGO MARADONA
Maradona was named the FIFA player of the 20th century alongwith Pele. He inspired Argentina to victory in the 1986 tournament. As a player, Maradona was peerless, although his drug addiction ended his career mid-way.
RONALDO
The most prolific scorer in World Cups with 15 goals, he was just a youngster when the Brazil squad won the 1994 World Cup. Post that, he helped Brazil reach the finals in both1998 and 2002 and won Brazil its fifth world title in 2006, his last World Cup.
ZINEDINE ZIDANE
He is best remembered for the headbutt that floored Marco Materazzi in the 2006 final, earning him a red card and bringing an ignominious end to his glorious career. A player of rare talent with uncommon skill and technique, the three-time world player of the year sailed France to a stunning win in the 1998 World Cup on home turf.
JUST FONTAINE
Fontaine's record is unlikely to be broken anytime soon: Lauded for scoring 13 goals in a single tournament, Fontaine tormented his opponents with his speed and finishing touch. One of the best players ever.
