Not every joke can get the house in splits and Jennifer Lawrence need to understand that. Her rape quip at the Cannes Film Festival has got her some serious flak, even from her champions.

Her off the cuff and off-hand rape remark made at an industry party hosted by Vanity Fair and Armani was overheard, duly noted and  later snowballed into a controversy.

The 23-year-old actress was so thrilled to meet the 'Gravity' director Alfonso Cuaron for the first time that she couldn't contain her happiness and literally put her foot in her mouth by stating: “I broke out my rape scream for you!”, something that wasn't taken too kindly by those who overheard it.

Despite being censured, neither Miss Lawrence nor her PR team have come up with an apology.

Meanwhile the social media got deluged by a wave of criticisms, from celebs to media, censuring the star over her insensitivity.

Wrote celeb blogger, Perez Hilton: “We know you're always open and honest in interviews, but COME ON, a rape joke?!?”

Fishwrapper blog took this view: 'We're not mad, Jennifer, we're just disappointed. And, OK, we're pretty mad, too.'

There were some who however, thought thatt people were making too much out of a remark which was meant to be private.

'Jennifer Lawrence made a rape joke. Tumblr announces it's shutting down for the rest of the week!' wrote Better Khai Saul sagely on his Twitter.
