The Jan Lokpal bill was on Monday cleared by the Delhi cabinet. The 'Delhi Lokpal Bill, 2014' aims to bring all public servants, from chief minister to Group D employees, under its ambit, attracting a maximum punishment of life term to corrupt officials, if found guilty.
The bill doesn't extend special priviledge to even the chief minister of the state. Whistleblowers, "honest" officials and witnesses would be extended legal right of protection, according to the bill's provision. Besides, investigation and trial would be time-bound in cases of corruption.
Arvind Kejriwal and his AAP had fought and won the Assembly elections over the promise of curbing corruption and passing the Jan Lokpal bill. The draft Jan Lokpal bill was passed at a cabinet meeting, which was presided over by the Delhi chief minister.
The bill provides for a chairperson and 10 members to the institution of Lokpal. The Lokpal will be empowered to start suo motu investigation on receiving any complaint from any individual. Even business entities can be held liable for being a beneficiary in an act of corruption committed by a public official.
