Prime Minister Narendra Modi has emphasized the urgent need to address crimes targeting women and children. He has raised this issue multiple times in recent weeks, expressing serious concerns about the safety of women and children in the country. Modi has stated that while there are strict laws in place, they need to be implemented more effectively. He believes that faster decision-making in cases related to crimes against women will provide greater assurance of safety for half the population. The Prime Minister has consistently emphasized the importance of prioritizing cases involving crimes against women and has urged state governments to make this a top priority.

The Union Women and Child Development Minister responded to the West Bengal Chief Minister's letter to the Prime Minister, reiterating the demand for strict punishment for heinous crimes like rape and rape-murder. The Minister mentioned that the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita already prescribes a minimum of 10 years rigorous imprisonment for rape, and the punishment can be extended to life imprisonment or even death, depending on the severity of the crime. The Prime Minister also emphasized the importance of women's safety, stating that it is an unpardonable sin to commit crimes against women, and that he has repeatedly raised this issue from the Red Fort. He said the safety of mothers, sisters, and daughters is the country's priority, and he would convey this message to all political parties and state governments. He emphasized that it should not be protected or preserved.
