Assam Police has taken an unexpected decision. Including IPS officers, Assam police will professionally record the Body Mass Index (BMI) of the personnel.

Three months' time was given to the obese cops and asked them to get in shape. If the BMI is 30+ they have been offered more than three months of time, that is till November end. If the cops can't get fit by that time cops need to opt VRS option. On August 15th they are going to assess the BMI.

By the direction of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Director General of Police (DGP) Gyanendra Pratap Singh has taken the decision. Assam police drew up a list of 680 personnel, who are obese and also habitual drinkers. If they are proven unfit by the end of November, voluntary retirement will be offered.

The Chief Minister of Assam also said that 300 police officers have been handed over retirement because of their alcoholism.

DGP cleared the statement on social media. He wrote, “In line with directions of the Hon CMO Office, Assam Police Hq has decided to go in for professional recording of Body Mass Index (BMI) of all Assam Police personnel including IPS/APS officers and all DEF/Bn/Organisations. We plan to give three months time to all Assam Police personnel including IPS & APS officers till August 15th and then start BMI assessment in next fifteen days. All those who are in obese (BMI 30+) category would be offered another three months time to reduce weight (till November End) and after that VRS option except those who have genuine medical ground like thyroidism etc. DGP would be the first to have the BMI taken on August 16th.”
