The government is set to launch an annual pass based on FASTag technology, which will cost Rs 3,000, as announced by Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari in a post on X this Wednesday. This pass, intended solely for non-commercial private vehicles, will be made available starting August 15. It will be effective for one year from the activation date or until the vehicle has made 200 trips, whichever occurs first. By recharging the FASTag once for Rs 3,000, private vehicles can traverse national highways and state expressways throughout the year without incurring additional toll fees. For those who prefer not to use the annual subscription, sources have indicated that a fixed toll rate of Rs 50 for every 100 km could be introduced to replace the current toll plaza charges. Although the annual pass has been unveiled, it remains uncertain whether Minister Gadkari's department will implement the alternative pricing option. It is worth noting that a previous proposal for a 'lifetime FASTag' priced at Rs 30,000 and valid for 15 years was ultimately abandoned. This new system will utilize the current FASTag framework, with plans to eventually eliminate toll booths in favor of sensor-based collection methods that utilize GPS and automatic vehicle tracking, facilitating seamless travel without barriers.

"In a transformative step towards hassle-free highway travel, we are introducing a FASTag-based Annual Pass priced at ₹3,000, effective from 15th August 2025. Valid for one year from the date of activation or up to 200 trips—whichever comes first—this pass is designed exclusively for non-commercial private vehicles such as cars, jeeps, and vans. The Annual Pass will enable seamless and cost-effective travel across National Highways throughout the country. A dedicated link for activation and renewal will soon be made available on the Rajmarg Yatra App as well as on the official websites of NHAI and MoRTH. This policy addresses long-standing concerns regarding toll plazas located within a 60 km range and simplifies toll payments through a single, affordable transaction. By reducing wait times, easing congestion, and minimizing disputes at toll plazas, the Annual Pass aims to deliver a faster and smoother travel experience for millions of private vehicle owners" told Nitik Gadkari on his official social media page.
