At least seven people were died and over 50 left injured after a tram overturned in south London, police said. The driver had been arrested, police confirmed later.
According to the investigating team, the tram was travelling too fast on a sharp bend. Emergency services were called at around 6:10 am (0610 GMT) to report the incident, that a two-carriage tram had derailed near a stop close to central Croydon. It is a major transport hub and a large suburb to the south of the British capital.
Police said in a statement that, "We can confirm a total of at least seven people have sadly died at Croydon." "Officers continue to work at the scene.”
"Initial indications suggest that the tram was travelling at a significantly higher speed than is permitted," a police spokesman later said.
Prime Minister Theresa May described it as a "terrible incident" and said her thoughts and prayers were with those affected in the accident.
