Large quantities of uranium reserves were discovered in Srisailam forests by a joint research team of Osmania University and Atomic Minerals Directorate (AMD) from Hyderabad.
This discovery of uranium reserve around Srisailam of Kadapa basin in Andhra Pradesh will definitely boost Indian nuclear power plants.
Latest equipment has been used to detect the radioactive element, uranium, in Chennakesavula Gutta and Padra villages. The quality of uranium found is also of superior nature and is comparable to that of Australia and Canada.
Nuclear power plant in Srikakulam district
The government has planned a nuclear power plant in Srikakulam district, while the major source of India’s N-power plants is expected to be these Srisailam reserves. However, environmental activists have been protesting over the proposed nuclear power plant in Srikakulam. This discovery could trigger the protest.
Earlier, AMD discovered uranium reserves in several districts of Telangana and Andhra, including Mahbubnagar, Nalgonda, Karimnagar, Guntur and Kadapa districts.
Officials reveal that there are around seven lakh tonnes of uranium reserves in Andhra Pradesh alone particularly in Kadapa basin, whereas around one lakh tone is in Telangana. Both Telugu speaking states together contribute around 25% of total uranium reserves in India.
