Nitish Kumar, the leader of the Janata Dal-United (JDU), was sworn in as Bihar Chief Minister for the ninth time yesterday, signaling a significant change in alliances. He ended his partnership with the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and Congress, and formed a new coalition with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The swearing-in ceremony at Raj Bhavan not only marked the beginning of a new era, but also introduced a fresh team of leaders, including Samrat Choudhary and Vijay Kumar Sinha, who are expected to play pivotal roles in Bihar's political landscape.

At the center of this transition is Samrat Choudhary, the newly appointed Deputy Chief Minister and state President of the BJP. Choudhary, a prominent figure in Bihar politics, has long been associated with a vow to discard his turban only when his party assumes power in the state. With his appointment as the state BJP chief in March last year, Choudhary's political journey, which has spanned various parties including the RJD and JDU, has reached a crucial turning point. Having previously served as Minister for Urban Development and Housing, Health, and Metrology and Horticulture, Choudhary brings a wealth of experience to his new role. Meanwhile, Vijay Kumar Sinha, a member of the influential Bhumihar community, brings his own expertise and perspective to the table as a key player in Bihar's political landscape.

Mr Sinha's political journey began in Lakhisarai district, where he first became involved with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, the student wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), during his time studying civil engineering at a polytechnic in Barauni. In 2010, Mr Sinha entered the world of electoral politics, making his debut in the Bihar Assembly. After seven years, he was appointed as the Minister of Labour Resources. In 2020, he assumed the role of Speaker of the Bihar Assembly. His time as Speaker was eventful, including moments such as Nitish Kumar's emotional outburst on the House floor and a tense episode in 2021 when he was held hostage inside his chamber by members of the RJD.
