The latest report from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare reveals that active Covid-19 cases in India have climbed to 2,710, with the highest concentration of infections in Kerala. After experiencing a period of low case numbers, India is witnessing a resurgence of Covid-19, as infections surged five-fold, surpassing the 1,000 mark by the week ending May 25. The data indicates that Kerala has documented 1,147 cases, trailed by Maharashtra with 424, Delhi with 294, and Gujarat with 223. Both Karnataka and Tamil Nadu reported 148 cases each, while West Bengal logged 116 cases. Furthermore, seven fatalities have occurred in the past day, bringing the total death count for the first five months of this year to 22. Over the last 24 hours, Maharashtra has recorded two fatalities, and Delhi, Gujarat, Karnataka, Punjab, and Tamil Nadu each reported one death, marking the first death in Delhi during this wave.

However, the Health Ministry has emphasized that most Covid cases are mild, advising against any cause for alarm. The high number of cases in Kerala could be attributed to the state's increased testing efforts. Additionally, Mizoram has registered two Covid cases for the first time in seven months. The recent rise in Covid cases has been tentatively linked to two new Omicron sub-variants – LF.7 and NB.1.8.1 – although the dominant strain in the country remains JN.1. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has yet to designate LF.7 or NB.1.8 as Variants of Concern (VOCs) or Variants of Interest (VOIs). Experts point out that while these new variants might partially bypass immune responses, there is currently no evidence suggesting they lead to severe long-term illness.

Symptoms are generally similar to those associated with the common cold and may include fever, runny nose, sore throat, headaches, fatigue, and a sense of exhaustion. In light of the rising case numbers, various states have instructed hospitals to ensure sufficient availability of beds, oxygen supplies, testing kits, and vaccines. It is recommended that older adults and individuals with pre-existing health conditions wear masks when in crowded environments.
