Today, two significant government committees convened to deliberate on India's strategy in response to the state-sponsored terrorism perpetrated by Pakistan, following the tragic killing of 26 tourists in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. Tensions between the two nations are escalating. The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, conducted its second meeting since the aforementioned terror incident. Previously, in their initial meeting, the CCS had decided on multiple retaliatory measures against Pakistan, which included halting the Indus Waters Treaty. After the CCS session, the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs (CCPA) commenced discussions regarding the Opposition's proposal for a special parliamentary session to address the Pahalgam attack.
Once both cabinet meetings concluded, PM Modi had a follow-up meeting with senior Union ministers to update them on the discussions. Opposition figures, such as Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, had reached out to the Prime Minister, requesting a parliamentary session to present a united front regarding the terror incident. During its first meeting on April 23, the CCS strongly condemned the Pahalgam attack and offered heartfelt condolences to the victims' families. Briefings for the CCS revealed that the terrorist actions had cross-border connections. It was reported to the CCS that the attackers aimed to disrupt the successful elections in Jammu and Kashmir, now a Union Territory, as well as hinder the region’s continuous progress in economic development.
In reaction to the attack, local residents organized large protests, deeming the act a deliberate attempt to isolate the area by scaring away tourists and consequently halting economic activities. Nevertheless, many tourists who had planned trips prior to the attack chose not to cancel. Despite feelings of disappointment due to the closure of several tourist attractions, they expressed assurance about their travels to Jammu and Kashmir, indicating no fear. "I learned about the attack on the night of the 22nd... Our flight was scheduled for the 23rd at 5:30 AM. Initially, there was a lot of fear within my family about whether to proceed. Eventually, our uncle encouraged us to go, saying, 'Let's go,' and so we did... We're now in Pahalgam, and everything feels secure," shared Keval Patel, a resident of Ahmedabad. According to sources, PM Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to delivering a decisive blow against terrorism, expressing complete trust in the professional capabilities of the nation’s armed forces.
