A postgraduate junior doctor was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical Hospital in Kolkata on August 9th. As a prime suspect, police has arrested a civic employee after spotting him on the CCTV. The whole nation is raising its voice against rape. West Bengal Governor CV ANanda Bose responded to the incident and called it a shame on civil society. He told the students, “I am with you and we will work together to solve this. I assure you justice. My ears and eyes are open.” The Indian Medical Association had called for an emergency meeting with its state branch and is looking for the future course of action.
The body of the medical graduate was found inside a seminar hall of the RG Kar Medical College. The same hospital where the woman’s body was found has conducted a post-mortem. The doctor's body was found on the same floor (Third floor), where she was on duty. The crime took place between 3 AM and 5 AM. CBI has grilled the doctors over the rape and murder. Dr Arunava Dutta Chowdhury was questioned, he took in-charge as head of the department on August 1st. Dr Sanjay Vashisth, Hospital’s former superintendent was also questioned, he was shifted immediately after the crime. All the doctors were questioned on the outskirts of Kolkata at the CGO complex in Salt Lake. Forensic doctors Rina Das, Molly Banerjee and Apurba Biswal were also summoned and questioned for four hours by the officials, All these doctors conducted a post-mortem.
Ratna Debnath, Diyasini Roy and Antea Burman were the doctors who conducted the preliminary inquest and mentioned that the body had 10 types of injuries. The victim's autopsy report claims that the doctor was raped and then murdered. It also hinted at an alleged gang rape, which indicates multiple penetration. The report studied,” Homicidal injuries are antemortem with the indication of sexual penetration”. The report also mentioned multiple external injuries, including on her upper lips, nose, cheeks, and lower jaw, injuries on her skull and blood coagulation. There was a sign of struggle on the arms and legs. Bleeding from her nostrils and eyes. The report also confirms that after the rape, they had throttled by applying pressure on her neck, which lead to death.
The autopsy is also clear that this is not a crime done by one person. In her vaginal swab, 151 mg of liquid (Semen) was found. The incident is heart-wrenching and raises questions about women’s safety at her workplace as this incident happened in a hospital.
