The Telangana government on Thursday launched the first phase of the Rs 6,098-crore farm loan waiver program for over 1.10 million farmers, waiving loans up to Rs 100,000. During last year's Telangana Assembly election campaign, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had promised to give a loan waiver of Rs 200,000 crore to farmers if his party came to power. Chief Minister Ravanath Reddy, Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka and State Minister Tummala Nageshwar Rao attended the Secretariat's 'Ritu Nastam' program and spoke to farmers before the release of funds. Reddy said the loan waiver program should be celebrated as a celebration. The implementation of the loan forgiveness plan will be completed in two further steps. He alleged that despite serving two terms, the previous BRS government failed to properly fulfill its promise of farm loan waiver.
