As per the decision by the Union government and CBSE board, class 10 and 12 examinations have been canceled on Thursday.

Class 10 and Class 12 exams are scheduled to be held from July 1 to July 15 in schools across the country. In the wake of current situation, CBSE and ICSE boards cancel the exams as many states expressed their inability to conduct the examinations due to COVID-19.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the CBSE told the Supreme Court that option would be given for class 12 students to appear later for the exams but class 10 exams will be permanently canceled. The decision took place in a hearing in the Supreme Court earlier today.

Meanwhile, ISCE, in order to erase further confusion, has completely canceled both class 10 and class 12 exams. The students of ICSE board will be evaluated based on internal assessments or pre-board exams.

Mr. Mehta said class 12 students of CBSE could either opt for the assessment scheme or appear for the remaining exams whenever the exams are held. The assessment for the students will be based on “past three exams”.

“The assessment results would be declared by July 15”, he added.

When asked by Justice Khanwilkar about when the class 12 exams would be conducted, he said that it will be “when conditions become conducive”.

Justice Sanjiv Khanna, also part of the bench said that the conduciveness will differ from state to state but not at the same time. He questioned the board about conducting exams in such situation.

Responding to it, Mr. Mehta said, the board cannot decide hypothetically now.

When asked about clarification on the next academic year, the Supreme Court conveyed that, if board results are declared in August it can start the session by September.

The Supreme Court has also asked the central government to come up with a time frame for a decision on conducting exams by State boards. The court also said that it would take up the case once again tomorrow and has asked the CBSE board to come with a revised draft of its order.

Both CBSE and ICSE exams for class 10 and 12 were scheduled to be held from July 1 to 12.
