The world's tallest statue and a tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the Statue of Unity in Gujarat have been thrown open to tourists from 9 a.m. today.

Located in Gujarat's Narmada district, the statue (about 600 feet) of an Indian independence leader who was crucial in uniting a fractured country is just 3.5 km away from Kevadia town and about 200 km from Ahmedabad.

The mammoth statue, which looks like over green hills and the Narmada River in the Western state of Gujarat was unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday.

For Gujarat tourism, which already has the Great Rann of Kutch and the Mahatma Gandhi's journey as big attractions, the Statue of Unity is on its way to being added to the list.

The Gujarat government has already begun promoting the Rs 3,000 crore statue as a major tourism destination. On an average, 15,000 visitors are expected daily to the site.

The statue of unity, which is double the height of New York’s world-famous Statue of Liberty is likely to draw a decent number of abroad tourists besides domestic visitors from all over India.
