It is being called a fire rainbow and its linked to Paddle Pop. The colorful sighting on Monday (February 20th) afternoon has taken over the social media by storm.
A rainbow is formed when sunlight passes through and is refracted by ice crystals in high-altitude cirrus clouds.
Some are saying that the ‘Fire Rainbow’ could also be an iridescent could, which is a rainbow effect on clouds, when light passes through tiny ice crystals or water droplets and its diffracted.
Four other types of Rainbows:
Double Rainbow
A double rainbow appears when the light is refracted not once, but twice, in a raindrop.
This phenomenon causes the secondary rainbow – which is above the first one – to have lighter colors in reverse order.
Last month Singapore was treated to a picturesque, when the social media was filled with the pictures of a double rainbow.
In Chinese culture a double rainbow is considered auspicious and also a reason for reflection and meditation.
Red Rainbow
The Red Rainbow is dominated by the primary color red, with a slightly yellow band.
It is said the reason behind the formation of ‘Red Rainbow’ is because the height of the sun above the horizon.
When the sun is in a low position, the width of the blue and green bands of light decrease, while the width of the red band increases.
Red rainbows are common, but they are difficult to spot unless the background is dark.
Twinned Rainbows
The ‘Twinned Rainbows’ is most spectacular cousin of the double rainbow, it consists of two arcs split from a single base rainbow.
The verdicts are out on the exact cause twinned rainbow, but in San Diego a few researchers used simulations in 2011 to puzzle it out
They concluded that sunlight needs to reflect off different sized raindrops.
Lunar Rainbow
Lunar Rainbow also knows as a Moonbow, it gets its name from the moonlight, which is refracted by water droplets in the air.
The rainbow appears white in color to the naked eye, by using long exposure photography will reveal its colors.
Lunar rainbows are rare and usually form when there is a nearly full or full moon low in the sky.
Water droplets in the air have to be in the opposite position of the moon, with a dark sky for the lunar rainbow to be observed.
