President Pranab Mukherjee could have become prime minister of India, but for the dynasty politics of the Congress party, said BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi on Wednesday. The BJP leader was speaking at a Kolkata rally in the run-up to the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.

The Gujarat chief minister blamed the Congress party for depriving Mukherjee on two occassions. The first time when Indira Gandhi was assasinated in 1984 and he was the senior most minister in the cabinet. But Rajiv Gandhi was made the prime minister, pointed out Modi while raking up the issue of dynasty politics of the Nehru-Gandhi family.

Again in 2004, when the Congress President Sonia Gandhi stepped down, Pranab Mukherjee was sidestepped and Manmohan Singh was chosen to be the Prime Minister of the country, said NaMo.

Modi, while trying to convince people of Bengal to vote out the Congress party in the 2014 General Elections, said that Pranab Mukherjee has managed important portfolio like home, finance, defence and external affairs. Yet the PM's post was not given to him in his political career, added Modi.

He even asked the people of Bengal not to forget Pranab Mukherjee's deprivation. The Gujarat CM called the President of India, who is a native of Birbhum in Bengal, as "Pranabda" out of courtesy and to woo the Bengali voters.

Modi said that if the electorates of Bengal vote for the BJP then they would enjoy three benefits. Firstly Mamata Banerjee can continue with her development work in Bengal. Secondly, BJP would work for the country's development from Centre. Thirdly, Pranabda (Pranab Mukherjee) would be at the top as the country's President,” said Modi while adding that people can have laddus (Indian sweets) in both their hands.
