The Congress-led UPA government on Wednesday decided to reverse the Supreme Court judgment that pronounced homosexuality a crime again. The government is weighing the pros and cons of the two options available before it. First option will be a review petition before the SC and the second option is to go for an ordinance followed by an amendment, of the law in Parliament, within a period of six months.
Government action follows Sonia Gandhi's thought provoking statement on Thursday. The Congress chief expressed disappointment at the SC judgement overturning the landmark Delhi High Court's judgement of 2009 decriminalizing homosexuality. She felt that section 377 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) was "archaic, repressive and unjust law", and it being upheld by the SC has caused a nationwide outrage against the decision. However, the government has not yet decided on the course of action against the SC verdict.
