Threads has officially launched its direct messaging (DM) feature, enabling users to engage in individual conversations without leaving the app. According to Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, this functionality has been one of the most requested features since Threads debuted in 2023. The release includes various options such as messaging controls, inbox sorting, and group messaging capabilities. Additionally, the Meta-owned platform has introduced Threads Highlighter, a new tool aimed at identifying Trending topics. Threads was introduced as a microblogging alternative to X (formerly known as Twitter) following Elon Musk's acquisition but initially lacked DM functionality; this is now being addressed.
Meta's recent announcement confirms that one-on-one messaging on Threads is accessible, albeit with certain restrictions. The company started testing this feature last month, and it has since been rolled out to a broader audience. Currently, DMs can be exchanged among Threads followers or mutual followers from Instagram who are 18 years or older. These messages are safeguarded by Meta's privacy policies and security protocols. Moreover, the DMs feature will soon receive additional enhancements, starting with message control options. This will enable users to decide who can send them messages on the platform, such as allowing DMs from individuals who do not follow them on Threads or Instagram, with such requests managed in a separate folder.
Furthermore, group messaging capabilities will be introduced, facilitating multiple users to participate in a conversation at the same time, as explained by Meta. There will also be inbox features, which will allow users to apply filters based on various criteria to locate specific messages easily. Users can access DMs on Threads through an envelope icon located in the bottom navigation tray. The provided visuals indicate that the user interface (UI) will closely resemble that of Instagram's DM list.
Alongside the messaging feature, Threads is unveiling Threads Highlighter as a new element in its UI. This tool aims to showcase “unique perspectives that lead to thoughtful conversations,” according to Meta. It will be prominently displayed in key sections of the app, assisting users in discovering relevant content. Additionally, Threads plans to highlight Trending topics with the Highlighter feature, with expectations for further enhancements in positioning soon.
