General Motors has announced the recall of 1.55 lakh cars in India to rectify defective keys issue, making it the second biggest recall of vehicles in India after Ford, which recalled 1.66 lakh cars a couple of years back. Models including Chevrolet Spark, Beat and Enjoy, manufactured between 2007 and 2014, will be the part of the recall.

The American car maker has made the recall to fix problems relating to a remote keyless entry accessory that enables opening of cars without a mechanical key.

Earlier on two separate occasions in 2013, General Motors recalled 1.14 lakh units of its multi-purpose vehicle Chevrolet Tavera to fix issues concerning address emissions and specification besides recalling 4,000 units of the diesel variant of Sail model to fix a potential engine issue.

“General Motors India is voluntarily recalling 155,000 units of Chevrolet Spark, Beat and Enjoy manufactured between 2007 and 2014 to address a potential safety recall for a remote keyless entry accessory issue,” the company said in a statement.

“The remote keyless entry accessory meets all the relevant regulatory standards; however, GM India has been made aware of some isolated cases where certain Chevrolet Spark, Beat and Enjoy vehicles were fitted with a faulty accessory. As a result, the impacted models could experience damage to the vehicle due to inappropriate routing,” the company explained.

GM India said that it will contact all affected customers to rectify the remote keyless entry accessory for no cost and requested its customers to visit the nearest Chevrolet dealer for a free inspection.

Beat, Captiva, Cruze, Enjoy, Sail, Sail Hatchback, Spark and Tavera models are being sold in India under Chevrolet brand.
