German media is rife with speculations that former Formula One legend Michael Schumacher might never come out of coma.
The 45-year-old retired Formula One star, who suffered a near-fatal fall and endured grave head injuries while skiing in the French Alps, has been in artificially induced coma for the past 18 days and has been deemed as 'critical' by experts. Apparently, his health condition seems worse than hoped for.
The lack of updates or progress reports from his medical team and management has added to the alarm. German publications are fueling fears about his future after interviewing neurological experts who worry that his head injury is so grave that he could be in a coma forever.
Normally, a coma is artificially induced to help the brain recover faster. But then, it is always withdrawn after one or two weeks.
Schumacher, who underwent a brain surgery to relieve cranial pressure caused by brain swelling, reportedly has not recovered enough to make doctors plan to wake him.
The longer a coma continues, the greater the damage it indicates, hinting that Schumacher could remain comatosed forever.
Not just that, Schumacher is also at a risk for a number of complications like cerebral hemorrhage, increasing cranial pressure, loss of muscle, and stress on his liver caused by the continual anesthesia.
Schumacher remains in critical condition at a hospital in Grenoble, France, where his wife and two children are holding a constant vigil.
