The India Post has decided to help the ones miss out receiving their parcels as they would have to leave for their work and there would be no one at home in order to receive their parcels.
The Kolkata Circle will be launching a free digital parcel locker service by the end of this month which works with the addressees collecting their respective parcels from the lockers in specified post offices at their convenient time.
Amitabh Singh who is the Postmaster general of the Kolkata Circle told The Hindu that the locker system is common in several countries in the southeast Asia region and in the Europe and now it would be made available in India with Kolkata being the city to start with.
It has been said that the facility will be made primarily available in two post offices where in one would be situated in the New Town and the other in Sector 5 of the Salt Lake City. These locations have been chosen as these are the places where in hundreds of IT companies are concentrated and therefore those regions are filled with several number of IT professionals working and living in the areas.
The addressee will have to provide the locker number as their address and the India post would be dropping their parcels at the locker numbers that have been provided by the addressees and that would be remained accessible for a week and at any hour of the day or night. The locker can be accessed with the help of an OTP as in the locker can be accessed once the OTP that has been sent is entered, with no human involvement.
It has been said that the service would be now available only for the consignments that will be received through the registered post or the speed post but in the future, extending the facility to the private courier companies can be considered.
