The Maharashtra state government has handed over Yakub Memon’s body to his family in Mahim, Mumbai for last rites under tight security. Earlier this morning, Yakub was hanged in Nagpur for his role in the 1993 Mumbai serial bomb blasts.
Yakub’s family members made an application to the Nagpur jail superintendent on Wednesday to hand over the body to them for last rituals. Government decided to hand over Yakub's body to relatives only if they abide by the conditions laid down by the authorities.
A top official said, “The family would not be allowed to take out procession and the funeral will have to be kept a low key affair. The last rites will have to be performed within the stipulated time...there should be no construction on the grave.”
