On Wednesday, Karnataka's Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar ignited a debate by stating that even divine powers would be unable to resolve Bengaluru's escalating traffic and infrastructure challenges overnight. His unexpected remark drew criticism on social media, with many users targeting the Congress government for its sluggish project completions and ongoing traffic issues. "Bengaluru cannot transform in just two or three years. Even God cannot accomplish that. Change will only come through effective planning and proper implementation," asserted Mr. Shivakumar. These statements were made during the inauguration of a workshop dedicated to road construction, coinciding with growing frustrations from Bengaluru residents and urban planners regarding deteriorating traffic conditions, delays in metro expansion, and insufficient public transport options. Critics contend that while the government has proclaimed ambitious infrastructure initiatives, progress on the ground has been notably slow and inconsistent.

Mohandas Pai, an economist and chairman of Aarin Capital, took issue with Shivakumar's remarks, questioning the government's efforts in enhancing Bengaluru's infrastructure. "Minister DK Shivakumar, it has been two years since you took office! We greeted your appointment with enthusiasm, but our situation has worsened significantly!" Mr. Pai expressed on social media. He pointed out that key infrastructure projects are incomplete, pedestrian paths are neglected, and public transport systems are inadequate. He urged immediate action, such as acquiring 5,000 new electric buses, creating a cleaner and more pedestrian-friendly environment, and facilitating continuous work on metro development.
The opposition BJP also criticized Mr. Shivakumar's statements, accusing the Congress government, led by Siddaramaiah, of severe inefficiency. "It is quite troubling that the individual who promised to elevate 'Brand Bengaluru' claims even God cannot rectify these issues. So who can?" questioned BJP leader Mohan Krishna in an interview. He lamented that the government has focused on activities unrelated to public development instead of addressing the pressing needs of the city. In response to the outcry, Mr. Shivakumar announced that his administration has published a roadmap aimed at resolving all outstanding issues in Karnataka's capital, which includes plans for designing new roads and bus stations to alleviate significant traffic congestion.
