Senior Congress leader Kamal Nath took oath as the pro-tem Speaker of the newly constituted Lok Sabha today.

The nine-time MP was administered the oath  in a simple function  held at the Yellow Drawing Room of the Presidents' House.Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vice President Hamid Ansari, Parliamentary Affairs Minister M Venkaiah Naidu and Minister of State (Parliamentary Affairs) Santosh K Gangwar attended the event.

Post oath, the Pro tem Speaker Nath vowed that he and his party would form "constructive Opposition" and will work to live up to the aspirations of the youth and the country.

If you are wondering what is a Pro tem Speaker, know that he is the one who performs the duties of the office of the Speaker from the commencement of the sitting of the Lok Sabha till the election of the Speaker. This piquant situation arose out of the untimely death of Union minister Gopinath Munde on Tuesday.

Generally, a Pro tem Speaker is officially sworn in by the President and an hour later, the Lok Sabha is convened and all the newly-elected 545 members are sworn in.

However, it won't be the case this time. Today, soon after President Pranab Mukherjee administered the oath to Kamal Nath, the House was convened only to be adjourned as a mark of respect to the deceased BJP leader Gopinath Munde. The new members  will be sworn in on June 5.

After observing a two-minute silence as a mark of respect to the departed member, the first day of the House was adjourned for the day.

Kamal Nath will preside over the Lok Sabha proceedings until the appointment of a new speaker on June 06.

Munde will be cremated in his village in Maharashtra today with full state honors.
