Mother’s Day is celebrated across the world to acknowledge the presence of all the mothers. It is truly a special day for the mothers who are mostly underrated in this male-dominated society.

Origin of Mother’s Day

The celebration of Mother's Day began in the year 1908 when Anna Jarvis organized a memorial for her mother, Ann Jarvis, a peace activist who used to care the wounded soldiers of the American Civil War. The event was held at the St Andrew's Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia, which currently holds the International Mother's Day Shrine.

Anna Jarvis began the task of getting support for the celebration of Mother's Day in the United States in 1905 after her mother died the same year. She wanted to honor all the mothers of the world who have done a lot for their family and society.

Due to her continuous efforts, most of the states in the United States by 1911 started celebrating Mother's Day as a local holiday and the West Virginia, the home state of Jarvis became the first state to declare the holiday for the occasion in the year 1910.

Mother’s Day Is Not Always on the Same Date Each Year  

The holiday is celebrated every year on the second Sunday of May. This year it will be on May 12th.

More Calls Are Made on the Mother’s Day Than Any Other Day   

Approximately 122 million calls are made on the second Sunday of May.

Busiest Day of the Year for Restaurants  

According to the National Restaurant Association, in 2018 about 87 million adults made plans to go to a restaurant for Mother's Day.

As of 2014, There Were 43.5 Million Moms in the State  

These women are between the ages of 15 and 50 and have collectively mothered 95.8 million children.

In 2018, over $23 Billion Was Spent on Mother's Day  

On average, shoppers spend $180 on gifts for their mothers. A nationwide total of $4.6 billion was spent on jewelry and $4.4 billion on dinners or brunches.
