If there is one social media site that Elon Musk clearly enjoys, it is X. He purchased it in 2022 when it was still known as Twitter and later changed its name. According to Musk, other platforms seem less important or are not designed for what he believes are “serious” discussions and keeping up with significant issues. Recently, he stirred up debate again by labeling Instagram as a site meant for girls. This statement was made while he was responding to a popular thread about how social media habits can indicate various “stages” in life. The initial posts humorously mentioned actions like sharing revealing photos, continuously posting stories, or showing off homemade meals and sourdough bread.
Musk joined the discussion with a brief but quickly spread remark: “Instagram is for girls. ” To further clarify his point and ensure people understood his views, he added another comment that suggested deeper, possibly sexist ideas. As people reacted, he followed up with another tweet saying: “Sometimes grown men send me their Instagram profiles and I’m like, are you transitioning or what? ”
But why does he do this? The simple reason is that Elon Musk can do as he pleases, and he often chooses to provoke social media users. His latest statements might just be another way to stir things up. There are also a few other factors involved. In his posts, Musk often appears to have negative views about gender. He has frequently criticized the idea of “transitioning,” which means changing gender. He seems to link certain types of content with “girls,” often labeling it as unimportant, gossip-filled, and silly. This type of content is very popular on Instagram. Yet, beneath the jokes and controversial statements, Musk is also doing something he often does, which is promoting X by criticizing rival sites. Around the same time he made the comments about Instagram, he responded to a discussion about recommendation algorithms and social media feeds, claiming, “Only X is open; the other social media companies manipulate the results secretly. ”
This is not the first instance of Musk targeting Meta-owned sites specifically. Due to his rocky relationship with Meta’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Musk has frequently criticized the company’s apps and features. Just weeks ago, he threw shade at WhatsApp, stating: “Can’t trust WhatsApp. ” He also recommended that users switch to X for safer audio and video calls.
