Sonam Raghuvanshi, who faces allegations of plotting her husband Raja Raghuvanshi’s murder during their honeymoon in Meghalaya, reportedly became emotional before the Special Investigation Team (SIT) when shown the collected evidence against her. Sources indicate that she admitted to masterminding the plan to eliminate her spouse with the assistance of her purported lover, Raj Kushwaha, who had confessed to his involvement a day prior.
Following her mysterious appearance 1,300 kilometers from Shillong at 3 am on a Monday, Sonam initially attempted to present herself as a robbery victim. Throughout the 27-hour travel from Ghazipur to Shillong, she remained silent in the presence of police officials. But once the interrogation commenced at 11 am, she maintained her narrative of being a victim of theft, according to the sources.
However, the evidence provided by the SIT, which included CCTV footage of her interactions with the assailants after the event, call logs, and tangible items such as a blood-stained shirt and a raincoat found at the crime scene identified as hers, compelled Sonam to break down and confess. Shillong Superintendent of Police Vivek stated, "We possess conclusive evidence against Sonam that confirms her participation in the homicide." On June 10, Raj Kushwaha, along with the three hired contract killers—Vishal Singh Chauhan, Akash Rajput, and Anand Kurmi—acknowledged their roles in the murder of Raja Raghuvanshi.
According to ACP Poonam Chand Yadav, who provided insights exclusively to India Today TV, the accused not only confessed to the murder but also indicated that Sonam was present at the scene and "watched her husband die." Sonam and Raja were married on May 11 in Indore and subsequently traveled to Meghalaya for their honeymoon. The couple checked out of their homestay in Nongriat village on May 23, and ten days later, Raja’s body was discovered in a gorge 200 feet deep, situated about 20 km away. Authorities report that Raja was killed by the three men allegedly hired by Raj Kushwaha, who had been in contact with Sonam throughout the ordeal. All four suspects are currently detained by the police.
In a related development, Sonam Raghuvanshi’s brother, Govind, has publicly expressed his belief in her involvement in the murder. "Based on the evidence available thus far, I am completely certain that she is responsible for this murder. All the individuals implicated are connected to Raj Kushwaha. We have severed our relationship with Sonam Raghuvanshi. I offer my apologies to Raja’s family," he stated. Govind further disclosed that Raja referred to Sonam as ‘didi’ and that she had been tying a rakhi to him for three years. "Had we known about their relationship, we would never have permitted this to occur," he added.
