Navy Speedboat Collides With Ferry: 13 Killed

A navy speedboat conducting engine tests lost control and collided with a passenger ferry near Mumbai. The accident resulted in the deaths of 13 people, including a naval officer and two from the equipment maker. A video captured the incident from the ferry, which had 110 passengers. The navy boat had 5 people on board. Ten ferry passengers were killed, while the remaining 102 people, including 2 survivors from the navy boat, were rescued. The navy stated that the incident occurred around 4 pm, when the navy craft lost control and collided with the Neel Kamal ferry, which was transporting passengers from Gateway of India to Elephanta Island. The video of the collision surfaced several hours after the accident. Initially, it was reported that the ferry was sinking, but the cause was unknown. The Colaba police have started the process of filing a case regarding the incident.

The tragic incident in Mumbai has deeply saddened the nation. The Prime Minister's Office has announced financial assistance of ₹ 2 lakh for the families of the victims and ₹ 50,000 for the injured. The Defence Minister expressed profound grief over the loss of precious lives in the collision between a passenger ferry and an Indian Navy craft in Mumbai's harbor. The Maharashtra Chief Minister promised an additional ₹ 5 lakh from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund for the families of the deceased. Rescue efforts were made by the Indian Navy, Coast Guard, police, port authorities, and local fishermen, with helicopters also involved in the search and rescue operation.
