Reacting to the Bharatiya Janata Party's attack on the Kolkata hospital rape and murder case, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today questioned the progress of the CBI probe in the sensitive case and said "justice will not be served." Where is it? she asked. The Chief Minister, who was addressing a public function to mark the founding anniversary of the Trinamool Congress' student wing, said she met her parents at the R.G. Seminar Hall of the Medical College and Hospital two days after her body was found. She said: “I gave five days but the case was transferred to the CBI. They don't want to serve the justice. They want a delay. It's been 16 days. Where is the justice?”. The Prime Minister said the state government would convene Parliament and introduce a bill that would provide for the death penalty for rapists. Trinamool leaders have criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party for yesterday's march to Nabanna state secretariat, which led to chaos on the streets of Kolkata. Organizers said the rally was planned by student organizations but the Trinamool alleged it was a conspiracy by the BJP and the ABVP to create unrest.

While police used tear gas, water cannons and batons to disperse protesters, more than 200 people were arrested. The BJP today called for a 12-hour protest against the police action. “We want justice and death by hanging for the accused. They (BJP) have moved away from the goal of seeking justice for the victims. Now, the BJP is shameless. The Prime Minister also paid tribute to the city's police force. At an earlier event, Abhishek Banerjee, Trinamool general secretary and Banerjee's nephew, said, "I salute the police who did not fall into any trap and prevented death," saying he would introduce a private member's bill on the Rape Prevention Act. “An unfortunate incident has happened and the whole of India wants justice, but there are people who are pursuing flawed policies in this regard. They are responsible for incidents in Unnao, Hathras, Kathua and Bhadrapur. Rape cases. The time must come. – Limited trial and sentencing and this should be written into the law".

She also asked why the CBI has not yet arrested Sandeep Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, who is under investigation for handling cases and corruption allegations. As the Trinamool Congress targets the Center and demands stricter laws for women's safety, Women and Child Development Minister Annapurna Devi says the Bengal government has failed to implement plans to combat crimes against women. The minister told PTI that it was ironic that the condition of women in the state continued to deteriorate despite Bengal being the only state in the country to have a woman as chief minister. “States like West Bengal are trying to implement the central government’s plans but there is no plan but the (West Bengal) government is lagging behind,” she said.
