The national capital New Delhi has been named as the most polluted city of the world and the Air Quality Index (AQI) has been quite low and is alarming. The Air Quality Index (AQI) of New Delhi continued to be in the 'Very Poor' category as per the reports from the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research (SAFAR)-India. Despite several measures taken and restrictions imposed, the air quality did not improve much. The AQI remained at 369 as per the Ministry of Earth Sciences. Anything above 300 is considered as severe or hazardous. Delhi is expected to receive rains between 5th and 8th. The situations are expected to turn better and the temperatures are expected to take a dip.

The Omicron variant has shattered New Delhi and more than 10,000 new cases are reported in the national capital yesterday. New Delhi joined the world's most polluted city and Kolkata is the only Indian city in the past with an AQI of 167. The surrounding cities like Gurugram and Noida too reported poor AQI and they continued to be poor from the past few weeks. The official statement of SAFAR told "High winds and intermittent rains are likely during January 5 to January 8 that are expected to improve AQI significantly to 'lower end of very poor' through strong dispersion and wet deposition. Mixing layer height continues to be about 1 km".
