India is said to continue as the second largest importer of arms in the world with the first being Saudi Arabia.

The country India has figured on the list of the global arms exporters and has made its way to the 23rd position among the top 25 exporters of weapons, with its biggest clients being Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Mauritius, although it constitutes only 0.2 per cent share of the total global figure, which is negligible.

Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) has released a latest data on the international arms transfers, on Monday based on which it can be said that India has accounted for 9.2 per cent of the total global arms imports during the years of 2015 to 2019 while 12 per cent has been registered by Saudi Arabia.

It has been said that China has stood at the fifth position with 4.3 percent and the country Pakistan has stood at 11th position with 2.6 percent of the total global arms imports during the years of 2015 to 2019.

It has also said that although both the countries have long- standing aims for producing their own major arms, they remain largely dependent on the imports and also have the substantial outstanding orders and the plans for importing all the types of major arms.

As per the data provided by Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), it has been observed that China accounts for 73 per cent of its all- weather ally Pakistan’s imports of arms which is then followed by Russia being 6.6 per cent and Italy at 6.1 per cent.

However, the export of arms of India have certainly shown an increase as the official figures show that they have jumped from Rs 2,060 in the year 2015-16 to being Rs 10,746 crore in the year 2018-19.

It has also been observed that the figure for the year 2019-20 has stood at Rs 5,883 crore on the 31st of the month of December in the last year.
