First detention centre for illegal immigrants opened in Karnataka

Karnataka launched its first detention centre for the illegal immigrants contradictory to PM Modi’s statement. The centre was launched on Sunday near Nelamangala which is about 40km from Bengaluru.

Modi said that, there will be no detention centers in India as he referred to the National Register of Citizens (NRC) which has been proposed, as he addressed the rally at Ramlila Maidan at Delhi.

The commissioner, social welfare department, RS Peddappaiah told Times Of India that, “we’ve opened the centre and its ready to house illegal immigrants.”

The advancement of opening the centre which was actually scheduled to be opened in January, is done following a directive from the Union government. There has been no illegal immigrant launched in the detention centre until now as it has been opened recently. Peddappaiah said that, “the Foreign Regional Registration Office identifies illegal immigrants and sends them to the detention centre. We are ready to house them with necessary infrastructure and staff.”

The detention centre has been facilitated with six rooms, a kitchen and a security room with two watchtowers and barbed wire over the compound wall and can house 24 people.

Karnataka HC has been informed by the state government that 35 temporary detention centres have been identified in all the districts of the state so as to house the illegal immigrants. The information has come at the hearing of bail petitions of the two illegal immigrants from Bangladesh.

The government had told that, the cases were registered under the Foreigners Act which were around 612 in number and other laws against 866 individuals from several different countries.
