Protests against the Citizenship act that was amended led to decision of many students in Jamia Millia Islamia leaving for their homes, sources said.

As many as 50 students who were detained from the University were released on Monday. The University remains tensed after the protests over the Citizenship Act that was amended, said police.

The police entered the university campus on Sunday with their force, following protest against the Citizenship Amendment act which soon led to violence turning the campus into battlefield.

The Citizenship Act that was amended was to provide citizenship to non-Muslim religious minorities in the three neighbouring countries who have arrived India as they faced religious persecution.

A senior police officer said that, out of the 50 students who were released, 35 were from the Kalkaji Police Station and 15 were released from the New Friends colony police Station.

The Delhi Minority Commission (DMC) issued a direction to the SHO of Kalkaji Police Station to either release the students of the university who were hurt and being held there, or to take them to a reputed hospital for treatment with no delay failure to which would attract appropriate action.

Many students feel they are not safe inside the campus as well and many women students prefer to leave for their homes which leads to continuous tension in the university.

The university postponed the exams and declared winter vacation from Saturday till January 5.

The entry and exit gates of all the metro stations were opened and the services were resumed at all the stations, said DMRC.

After the protests in southeast Delhi, the Delhi Metro Rail corporation(DMRC) had closed the gates of 13 metro stations on Sunday on advice from the police.

“Security Update Entry and exit gates at all stations have been opened. Normal services have resumed at all stations,” DMRC tweeted on Monday.

Police said that, the movement of traffic was closed from Sarita Vihar to Klindi Kunj on Monday morning as a precaution.

The protesters clashed with the police in New Friends Colony near Jamia Millia Islamia and set fire to four public buses and two police vehicles which injured nearly 60 people that includes students, cops, and fire fighters.

The police denied firing at the protesters and used teargas and batons in order to subside the violent mob.

The students of Jawaharlal Nehru held a protest outside the police headquarters in central Delhi till late in the night, against the police action at Jamia University.

Waseem Ahmed Khan, Chief Proctor of Jamia Millia Islamia claimed that the Delhi police entered the campus with no permission and started beat the students and staff members.
