Police officers arrested a man, who was wearing armor and a cape on Thursday, after he ignored officers’ commands to drop the samurai sword that he was carrying at a north Plano neighborhood.

Police received a report of an armed man wandering near Independence Parkway and Vidalia Lane, south of Sam Rayburn Tollway at around 10 a.m., spokesperson for Plano police, David Tilley said.

Plano police department believes that the man has mental health issues.

"We were trying to communicate with him and are having difficulty," Tilley said.

Officers told him several times to drop the sword, but he sdid not comply.

Police were able to make him busy, by talking to him at a safe distance as they waited for another officer to arrive with a non-lethal device that shoots a rubber baton.

"When it hits them, then it kind of stuns them and most often they drop what they've got and that's when our officers are able to jump in and take the individual into custody," Tilley said.

Police detained the man at around 10:15 a.m.
