Two Toledo men were sentenced to prison on Wednesday after beating an African-American stranger in street in the last year, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.
Robert Paschalis, aged 25, was sentenced to two years in the prison, while Charles Butler, aged 34, was sentenced to the seven years. Both pleaded guilty in the November at the Northern District Court of Ohio for committing a hate crime.
“Attacks like these have no place in our society,” the U.S. Attorney David Sierleja said. “The victim in this case was minding his own business when he was jumped by two racists. They deserve the prison sentences they received today.”
On May 18th , 2016, Paschalis and Butler drove past the unnamed victim in the GMC truck bearing a small Confederate flag sticker, circled back, then attacked the man while yelling the racial slurs, according to the court documents.
The beating lasted for over a minute and the crime was captured on the surveillance cameras of a nearby restaurant, said the investigators. During the attack, Butler pulled a broom from back of the truck and he struck the victim several times with it.
Paschalis and Butler only stopped when the two off-duty Ohio Public Safety Officers passed by and broke up the fight, states the documents. Butler later posted on the Facebook that the attack was “in the name of the White Race,” according to the court documents.
The Department of Justice reported that Paschalis admitted the crime during his plea that the beating occurred because the victim is an African-American.
“This sentence sends a stern message to those who practice and advocate racial violence,” said the Acting Assistant Attorney General Tom Wheeler. “Robust prosecution of hate crimes is a priority for the Justice Department, and we will continue to vigorously enforce these laws.”
