A mother of three died after completing a half marathon in Pennsylvania, stunning her friends and family, who described her as a tireless “super mom”.

The Lackawanna County Coroner's Office said that the mother died due to abdominal bleeding caused by a ruptured vein.

Corner Tim Rowland said that the abdominal bleeding is a rare condition.

Doherty collapsed at the finish line, emergency medical technicians were able to attend to her right away. But, even that could not save her life.

Friends of Doherty said that she was a “super mom”, who worked in several community groups. Doherty volunteered at St. Clare/St. Paul Catholic School in Scranton, where the principal said that she was active in the parent-teacher association.

Doherty’s neighbors in Scranton's Green Ridge section said that they cannot believe a woman so active and athletic could die so young.

"Disbelief, at the first 36-years-old, you just do not think that it can happen," said Mark Seitzinger of the Green Ridge Neighborhood Association. "As people started talking about it a little bit more, it started to hit home a little bit more. It's sad, just sad that it's in the community."

"She was a bright, energetic young woman and a devoted wife and mother. Our thoughts and prayers are with her husband, three young children, and her family," Bishop Joseph Bambera said in a statement.
