Maryland Muslim Communities from all across Maryland are pushing back against the President Donald Trump's new executive order. The revised travel ban has some significant changes from the one halted by the federal courts. Muslim leaders said that there is no credible evidence that refugees and immigrants from the countries included in the travel ban pose a threat to the national security and condemn the executive order.
The Muslim leaders from across the state, standing with the Council on the American-Islamic Relations, denounce the Trump's newest executive order.
CAIR Maryland outreach manager Zainab Chaudry said that, even though we are pleased with some of the more egregious problematic aspects have been revised and edited out or corrected, there are still some very egregious components that we are deeply disturbed of how it is going to impact our communities.
The White House stopped calling the new executive order as a travel ban.
There are five major differences between the order issued now and the president's first attempt, which was halted by the federal courts. This order will take effect from March 16th, and will not affect green card holders, nor will it revoke any visas obtained before Jan. 27th.
Maryland Stands Against Anti-Semitic Threats
Also, the new version is no longer an all-out ban on the Syrian refugees and Iraq is off the list.
Maryland Attorney General Brian Frosh and several other Democratic lawmakers, including Rep. Elijah Cummings issued statements sharply criticizing the President's executive order.
The order still cruelly blocks refugees, it is still un-American and it will still harm the American national security interests more than helping them,Cummings said.
Maryland's lone Republican congressman, Rep. Andy Harris, issued a statement disputing Cummings’ claims.
Harris said that, this temporary pause in immigration from those six countries was long overdue, giving our law enforcement and also homeland security officials adequate time to work and develop the vetting measures which will protect us from terrorist infiltrators.
