A spokesperson of the Baloch Republican Party told The Hindu over phone from Geneva, that Baloch leader Brahamdagh Bugti, has decided the move to seek political asylum in India.
Mr. Bugti’s decision followed a meeting of the Baloch Republican Party (BRP) that condemned the Uri attack and cleared his decision to shift to India.
Azizullah Bugti, a spokesperson of the BRP, said, “Baloch Republican Party’s Central Committee has ratified Mr. Bugti’s decision... At the moment, we are concerned about the safety of the President of the party and that is why the decision for political asylum was cleared,” . We have not yet decided who all will accompany him on his journey to India, but that is up to him decide and the party will volunteer members to accompany him to India as the need arises.”
Mr. Bugti’s decision to seek asylum came shortly after the attack in Uri, following which he had drawn attention to Pakistan’s alleged ties to terrorism.
Mr. Bugti said on a social network site after the attack, “We condemn the Uri attack in the strongest possible terms. It is yet another example of Pakistan’s role as a terrorism exporting country”.
The Hindu had reported previously that speaking over phone from Geneva, the Baloch leader had stated that India should consider supporting his quest for independence for his homeland in the way it supported the Dalai Lama and the late Sheikh Mujibur Rahman of Bangladesh.
Brahamdagh Bugti is the grandson of Nawab Akbar Bugti, the patriarch and head of the Bugtis, the largest tribe of Balochistan. Akbar Bugti had been killed in a police action by Pakistani on August 26, 2006 during the tenure of President Pervez Musharraf.
