President’s Convoy met with an accident, security personnel injured

One of the escort vehicles of President  Pranab Mukherjee's convoy met with an accident when one of the escort vehicles slipped into a ditch on the way to Bagdogra Airport from Darjeeling hills on Friday. One of cars carrying six security personnel lost control and strayed off from the hill road and went several meters down a deep gorge. The accident occurred near Sonada, when the convoy was heading towards the Bagdogra airport from Darjeeling. At least five security personnel sustained minor injuries in the accident.

Boththe President, Pranab Mukherjee and the chief minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, who were the part of the convoy, were safe. The President was on a three-day visit to Darjeeling. He tweeted after the accident, "Car in President's carcade from Darjeeling to Bagdogra goes off road, minor injuries to security personnel, #PresidentMukherjee safe,". Mr. Mukherjee tweeted further saying that all the security personnel in the vehicle were safe.

Mamata Banerjee, who supervised the rescue work, herself, said, "There is no reason to worry. Everybody is safe. The President is safe,". Her convoy was following President Pranab Mukherjee’s motorcade. She got down from the vehicle after the accident and helped the security personnel.

The President tweeted, "Unfortunate accident involving escort vehicle in convoy enroute to Bagdogra today ;everybody well by grace of God #PresidentMukherjee" . Ms. Banerjee told the President over telephone, "Dada you don't worry. All of them are alive. We have dropped ropes... One person has come up," .
