Surat railway station cleanest in India, reveals survey

A survey conducted by Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has revealed that Surat railway station is the cleanest one in the country. Next comes Rajkot and Bilaspur (Chhattisgarh) railway stations.

Railway station in Varanasi, which belongs to PM Modi’s constituency, ranked 65 among the surveyed 75 A-1 railway stations with earning revenues of over  Rs.50 crores. Feedback was taken from 1.34 lakh passengers for the survey, which is a part of pet project of PM’s ‘Swacch Bharat Abhiyaan’.

The Survey was carried out at 407 railway stations. It included 332A category stations and 75A-1 stations. Passengers were questioned based 40 cleanliness parameters. In terms of cleanliness, nearly 40% stations earned average score.

According to Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu, “The idea is to make the entire rail network clean, including stations, tracks and other railway premises. We decided to do a survey to bring out the present situation…This is a beginning to bring all the stations at par. We will also launch major [passenger] awareness programme.”

Under the A-category stations, the cleanest railway stations are Beas (Punjab), Gandhidham (Gujarat), Vasco Da Gama (Goa), Jamnagar (Gujarat), Kumbakonam (Tamil Nadu) and Nasik Road (Maharashtra).
