AICC President Sonia Gandhi lead the team of her party leaders from AICC headquarters to the residence of former PM Manmohan Singh in New Delhi this morning to express solidarity, a day after he was summoned by a special court in ‘Coal Scam’.
In the solidarity march, senior party leaders P Chidambaram, Mallikarjuna Karge, Anand Sharma, Gulam Nabi Azad, Shashi Tharoor, Digvijaya Singh, Ajay Maken, and others have participated. They all together expressed support to former PM Manmohan Singh to win the legal fight.
The former PM Singh was accused of criminal conspiracy and breach of trust for his alleged role in a multi-billion dollar scandal over the sale of coal fields.
Congress chief Sonia Gandhi said, "Dr Manmohan Singh is a man of intergrity. We will fight this legally. I am sure he (Manmohan Singh) will be vindicated."
After receiving Sonia Gandhi and congress leaders at his home, Singh said he was more than please and grateful with the gesture. "The Congress party, Sonia ji and all members of the working committee and senior leaders have come to my residence, expressed solidarity with me and that we will fight this case to the best of our ability," he said.
While speaking to media over the notices, he said, "Of course, I am upset but this is part of life. I have always said I am open for legal scrutiny. I am sure the truth will prevail and I will get a chance to put forward my case with all the facts."
Congress leader Shashi Tharoor spoken to media, "We are there to show former PM, our support and respect, we are there to show him that we stand with you"
Backing Manmohan Singh, former finance minister P Chidambaram said, "The whole world is aware of the personal integrity and honesty of Dr Manmohan Singh. We respect the judicial system. This case has been a misstep."
There were many opinions, after he was sent the summons, that he was victimized in the case connected to many leaders of the party and business leaders. However, congress party’s support in defending him gives other meaning.
