The attack took place on January 9 when there was a large number of people who had gathered in the mosque for a religious event. Pakistani Taliban has claimed responsibility of the suicide attack in the city of Rawalpindi, which killed seven people.

The spokesman of the Jamat-ul-Ahrar faction of Tehrik-e Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Ehsanullah Ehsan, said in an e-mail to journalists, "We claim responsibility of the attack on the Shiite mosque and vow to continue such attacks against enemies of Islam." Ehsan added, "We want to make it clear to these infidel rulers that we will not be impressed by any of their laws or hangings."
