India's Mars mission Mangalyaan has completed one month in orbit of the red planet. Google marked the event by putting up a special doodle on its home page for India on Thursday night.

Mangalyaan Google Doodle is static, unlike a few dynamic ones puts up by Google occassionally, and shows India's Mars mission in outer space. The red planet can be seen in the background. The doodle will be visible only in India.

The Google page carries an illustrated image, often seen in space-related images used in school notebooks during the late 80s and 90s.

Mangalyaan was launched into space on November 5, 2013 and entered the Mars orbit on September 24. The mission has been one of the biggest scientific achievements for India, which has placed ISRO, India's space agency, among a select group of four space agencies that were successful in sending a probe to Mars orbit.

Besides India, three other countries - the US, Europe and Russia – have been able to send a spacecraft to Mars. And India is the first Asian country to send a probe to the red planet. Also India was succeessful in its first attempt, a feat not accomplished by the other three country.

After entering into the Mars orbit, Mangalyaan sent back several pictures of the red planet to the control mission at ISRO. One of images sent shows Mars in its entirety. The picture has been widely shared and used all over the world.

Taking inspiration from NASA in the US which runs a twitter account, India's Mars mission also has a Twitter account - @MarsOrbiter - through which all mission related news are shared with the world.

The most recent tweet from the account read: "Phew! Experience of a lifetime. Watched the #MarsComet #SidingSpring whizzing past the planet. I'm in my orbit, safe and sound."

@MarsOrbiter has more than 1,68,000 followers.

Several countries have launched their Mars missions till now. Out of the 51 attempts made by various counrties, only 21 have been successful.
