India's domestic carrier IndiGo seems to be on a rapid expansion spree. The country's largest domestic airline has reportedly placed an order with Airbus for 250 A-320neo (new engine option) planes. Incidentally the agreement happens to be the single largest order ever made for narrowbody aircraft.
Each of the Airbus aircraft are priced at $102 million. This brings the collective price of the order by IndiGo to a whopping $25.5 billion.
Previously, IndiGo had placed orders for 280 A-320s. The new agreement between the low cost carrier (LCC) and Airbus is independent of the previous order.
An MoU was signed between IndiGo and Airbus, which described it as the "single largest order by number of aircraft" entered into by the European aircraft manufacturer.
IndiGo president Aditya Ghosh issued a statement reaffirming the LCC's commitment to provide affordable air transport in India and overseas in the long-term. The latest addition of aircrafts is aimed at bringing low fares and hassle free service to more and more air travellers. The move will also create more job opportunities and growth, added Aditya Ghosh.
Airbus president Fabrice Bregier thanked IndiGo for their confidence in their company. He also stated; " The A320neo continues to dominate world market share and this commitment confirms the A320 Family as the aircraft of choice in the most dynamic aviation growth markets."
The aircraft A320neo, which has been ordered by IndiGo, offers several innovations that include latest generation engines and large Sharklet wing-tip devices. These features have the advantage of upto 15% fuel savings.
